Manila-based Your Imaginary Friends has been playing ear candy music for four years now – with their playful melodies and moody undertones along with witty, mostly, coming-of-age adventure lyrics. Their distinct sound them made perform as an opening act to world-renowned Swedish indie-pop Club 8 back in 2010. Since then, they have taken advantage of the momentum by releasing two EPs – One Dreamy Indeterminate Hum (2010) and recently, Silence is a Villain (January 2013). Read on to learn more about the band.
Muni: How would you describe Your Imaginary Friends?
YIF: We are a real four-piece indie rock noise machine based in Manila that can also live in your subconscious, soundly playing the soundtrack of both your reality and imagination.
Muni: Who are your main influences? How did you find your passion for music?
YIF: When we started out, Ahmad was into The Pixies and Pavement, while I was into Taken By Cars and Bloc Party. He got me into listening to Death Cab for Cutie and candyaudioline. Khalid was also into Bloc Party and New Wave. We were all into The Smiths, though at the time I was more of The Cure kind of guy. Emerald was – and still is – into Silverchair.
Us four share an equal and collective passion for Ra Ra Riot, Shout Out Louds, Phoenix and Two Door Cinema Club, though we are yet to see how that will factor out in the way we make our music.
Music to us is like a getaway, a vacation where we get to be somewhere else. Or like a profound calling to become a superhero, where you get to become someone else. Imagine doing that several times a month during gigs.
Muni: What messages do you want to convey through your music?
YIF: That life is worth living. In between the lyrics lie life lessons that impart hope, and how to have fun while you’re at it.
Muni: What does “cutting the crap” mean to you?
YIF: There are things – unwelcome things – that we let in our daily lives even though we are fully aware that these things serve no use. These things are called crap, and these should find no place nor space in our lives and in our planet. Especially, in our waters where flora and fauna thrive.
Muni: What made you want to be part of the #CutTheCrap gig?
YIF: Creatures both beautiful and dangerous live in these waters, and we, being on top of the food chain, has this predetermined responsibility to watch over every one and all. We have the power to take care of our seas or take it for granted. Your Imaginary Friends would always choose the former, and we hope that in our tiny way of playing our music we can express our desire to come to our planet’s aid. We love swimming, and it hurts our hearts to see simple human debris (or crap) like cigarette butts float around our seas. This simple but flagrant human error is already an irrevocable tragedy to many species that live underwater.
