Slow Hello is a sentimental indie band that began in 2008, a then side project by Selena Salang, a former member of Ang Bandang Shirley and Candyaudioline. Through time, the band has expanded to include Russ Davis on guitars, Marc Inting on bass, and Erwin Hilao on drums giving her easy-listening songs more dynamics and complexities. She considers her songs as punchy conversations she has with other people and with herself. In 2011, Slow Hello has released two songs that make perfect summer anthems such as Minty Fresh and Cold Turkey. Check out our interview with Selena of Slow Hello.
Muni: What’s new with Slow Hello?
Selena: Slow Hello is currently working on a full-length album and expecting to release it in the second half of 2013.
Muni: Who are your main influences?
Selena: We listen to different things because we’re composed of different people. Some of the bands we listen to include Teenage Fanclub, Wilco, The Lemonheads, Yuck, Sondre Lerche and Ciudad.
Muni: What messages do you want to convey through your music?
Selena: Nothing in particular. But in general, we highly recommend self-expression through music to anyone. Make music. If we could do it, so can you.
Muni: What does “cutting the crap” mean to you?
Selena: It means letting go of little destructive habits that affect you or the people around you.
Muni: What made you want to be part of the #CutTheCrap gig?
Selena: It’s a worthy cause. Places where we listen to music probably experience the most cigarette butt litter because smoking seems to go hand in hand with drinking at gigs. It would be a big change if people realized they didn’t have to throw their butts on the bar floor or the concert grounds, and just kept their butts to themselves until they came across the next friendly trashcan.
