In a world ridden with social, political, and environmental problems from all directions, we need fresh ideas and innovative, multi-disciplinary solutions. But why rely on the youth?
This was one of the questions posed by the media during the launch of Catalyst – a project of Global Shapers Manila hub, together with Globe Tattoo to find ICT or tech-based / communications solutions to some of the challenges our nation currently faces.
Other questions in this line of thinking might include: Why choose the naïve, ignorant and lacking in experience? Why choose those without prominent names in their respective industries yet? Why choose these presumed hormone-driven, impulsive youth?
Why not?
Is it a fault that we can still envision a world where people work together towards development, and that we do get somewhere with our efforts? We won’t really know how ambitious or impossible our dreams actually are until we go out there and chase them.
We may not be familiar with the inner workings of traditional systems, but this lends us a fresher set of eyes to look at certain problems. That and our use of more progressive solutions utilizing technological advancements (social media, internet, apps, software, other ICT solutions), gives us an edge on thinking up more creative ways to address today’s issues.
We may not have titles, awards or decades of experience in development, but because we don’t have a reputation to worry about we can dare to do greatly, and we’ll probably make some mistakes. And these are what can truly teach us what works or what doesn’t, and we need the fearlessness to make mistakes along the way.
Catalyzing Innovation & Action
“We have a lot of exceptional young people who can act as catalysts toward social and economic change. So together with Globe, the Global Shapers PH want to harness their capabilities with the help of ICT and social media to come up with realistic solutions to real community problems.” says Bianca Gonzalez, Global Shaper and Tattoo Ambassador.
Filipino citizens, aged 18-30, can submit their tech-based solutions via a one-minute video entry from May 2 to 31, 2013.
Application forms may be downloaded from the Cat@lyst website, www.catalyst.com.ph and from the entries, 15 will be shortlisted. Five winners will then be chosen in June and will be awarded a P200,000 cash grant for program development, mentorship, and ICT support.
